“A Haunted House, But It’s...” Taking on these Everyday Health Challenges Women Experience
Have you seen any “A haunted house, but…” posts on social media? I didn’t get them at first, but I think I’ve figured them out now that I’ve seen them pretty much all over Instagram.
They play on the idea of a haunted house and replace the usual creepy parts with everyday challenges or annoyances, bringing some humour to them. Here are some I found funny….
I thought this would be a fun topic for this week’s newsletter since it was just Halloween a few days ago.
Here are some “haunts” that might be relatable to you:
1. A haunted house but it’s a supplement aisle with endless options you are supposed to take daily.
I know it can be SO confusing to know what supplements you should be taking. It’s easy to read an article or talk to a friend and be convinced that you need to be taking the same. The truth is we don’t all need the same supplements AND no one needs to be taking dozens of them. My approach with my patients is to order blood work to check the nutrient levels and health markers I can so that I have an objective marker of what’s needed. It also helps to take a thorough health history as symptoms can often point towards what is lacking and may be needed.
2. A haunted house, but it’s sleepless nights and hot flashes when you’ve got a big day ahead.
Not sleeping well stinks and affects so much. The opposite is also true: good sleep helps many things feel better and is essential to thriving in life. I talked about what I take into consideration to help improve sleep in last week’s newsletter - if you missed it, you can read it here.
3. A haunted house, but it’s trying to figure out how to eat 100g of protein in a day.
Do you feel like everyone is telling you to eat more protein (like me?), but it feels impossible to actually do it? In my FASTer Way groups, many women are surprised to find out how much protein they ideally need to eat when they start out in my groups. Tracking what you eat is a helpful tool to see how much you are eating compared to where you want to be. It can feel daunting but it is totally possible to reach that goal! One tip: split it up throughout the day and have it with each meal and snack (don’t leave it all for dinner!). The recipes provided in the FASTer Way app are geared toward having a good amount of protein with each meal and give lots of simple to make ideas. You can check out my protein cheat sheet here for some ideas of protein rich foods.
4. A haunted house, but it’s your jeans feeling too tight every single day.
First of all, if your jeans are too tight, I want you to go buy new ones. Life is too short to wear pants that are uncomfortable. If you want to work on losing some of that stubborn abdominal fat, then there are 3 things to consider doing if you aren’t already: start strength training 3x/week, learn how much protein, fat and carbohydrates your body ideally needs to be fuelled properly and track to reach those goals AND get help addressing any sleep, hormonal or blood sugar issues.
If you relate to any of the “haunts” I mentioned above, I can help! The right nutrition and exercise are the foundation of good health, so that’s a great place to start and why I’m so passionate about my FASTer Way program. Curious about trying FASTer Way? Now is the perfect time! For only $20US, the 5 Day Gut and Butt Challenge (Nov 11-15) will give you full access to live workouts, a meal guide, expert trainings, and coaching from me. If you want to talk about how to improve your sleep, your hormones or check if blood sugar is part of what’s making everything feel so hard, I can work with you on one on in a virtual naturopathic consult. I’ve shared the link to book that below.
